Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Foot, Ankle and Leg pain is often the result of Peripheral Nerve Entrapment and is often overlooked by physicians who are not trained in this sub-specialized area.

Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Symptoms include severe pain, numbness, tingling, burning, freezing, tightness, itching or loss of balance with weakness. The symptoms may present following an injury such as a work or automobile accident, an illness, taking medication for other conditions, surgery for other unrelated conditions, or may appear spontaneously or as a result of another condition such as Diabetes. Often, an injury as simple as an ankle sprain can result in this painful condition.

Many patients with peripheral nerve pain are ignored by other physicians or diagnosed with things such as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, Peripheral Neuropathy, Spinal Stenosis, or Fibro Myalgia. They are often told there is no treatment available, or are prescribed long term pain medication which can result in addiction and functional impairment.

Fortunately, in many cases, these symptoms are simply the result of nerve entrapment and are easily treated with a simple out patient surgical procedure. Much like a carpal tunnel release, the nerve is decompressed and the symptoms often disappear. Stitches remain in place for two weeks and physical therapy follows. 90% of patients experience pain relief and 70% report return of normal sensation (numbness disappears).

The diagnosis for nerve entrapment is made clinically by physical exam and requires a physician with specific training and experience in this area. Dr Kinmon trained with       Dr A. Lee Dellon of the Peripheral Nerve Institute at John’s Hopkins in 2002 and has been performing these procedures since then with excellent results. His award winning results using these techniques have been presented at national conferences.
